How do you help math students catch up and keep up?

Do The Math is an intervention program that gives students who have fallen behind the chance to catch up and keep up. Created by Marilyn Burns and Scholastic, the program was created specifically for those students who struggle in math and need more than what the teacher can provide in the context of regular math instruction.

I was responsible for the design and production of all components for thirteen modules of instruction.

Teacher Bookcase

Modules

Do The Math teaching materials and professional resources are stored in Teacher Bookcases for easy access.

Each bookcase is organized into thirteen scaffolded modules that focus on Addition & Subtraction, Multiplication, Division, and Fractions.

The modular design gives the program the flexibility to span multiple grade levels.

Demonstration Materials

Also known as math manipulatives, demonstration materials needed for instruction in the lessons are provided in mesh bags for convenient storage and access.

I collaborated with the marketing and manufacturing teams to design and produce manipulatives for all thirteen modules of instruction.

Online Assessment

mSkills

Do The Math features an online assessment tool (mSkills) that monitors student progress and assesses mastery of key, standards-aligned skills and concepts taught during whole-class and group instruction.

I was responsible for:

  • content organization and digital asset management of technical art
  • creating templates to facilitate production by organizing math content by problem type

Collaborating with editors and engineers, we were able to streamline workflow using a proprietary online Problem Authoring Tool (PAT).
